Design

The new Galaxy Watch 6 series have a lot in common with the Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 4 series. However, there are some great big enhancements and improvements in the new generation smartwatches.

For starters, the Galaxy Watch 6 has a sturdy Armor Aluminium chassis, while the Watch 6 Classic is made of Stainless Steel. The 40mm and 44mm Watch 6 series have a 1.3-inch and 1.5-inch displays, while the Watch 6 Classic comes in 43mm, and 47mm chassis supporting the same 1.3-inch, and 1.5-inch AMOLED screens.

The Watch 6 has a nearly identical design of the Galaxy Watch 5, while the Galaxy Watch 6 returns the beloved rotating dial, and it looks a lot like an improved Galaxy Watch 4 Classic smartwatch. The similar looks aren’t a bad thing, and it means that one of the most popular smartwatches are now back with some small improvements. In fact, Samsung says that it managed to increase the display by 20%, and increase the peak brightness to 2000 nits, making both smartwatches even more user-friendly in bright outdoor conditions.

Both smartwatches support Always-on Display with brightness adjustments, and the new W930 chip will be able to provide faster interactions and a smoother experience overall. The bezels are also 30% slimmer, and the rotating bezel is 15% thinner compared to previous generations. Samsung also added new one-click bands that allow users to easily mix and match watch bands, and users can select from over 704 unique combinations on Samsung.com.

Samsung already announced several new advanced tracking features coming to older Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 5 smartwatches, and these will be built-in to the Galaxy Watch 6 series, including the new Sleep Score Factor, Sleep Consistency, Sleep Mode and Coaching, Body Composition, and other features.

The Galaxy Watch 6 and Watch 6 Classic will come with One UI 5 Watch interface on top of the latest Wear OS 4 platform. The new operating system improves the smartwatches’ performance, reliability, and efficiency. Additionally, the new Galaxy Watch 6 series will combine Samsung Pay with Samsung Pass, and it will be called Samsung Wallet. The watch will be able to store event tickets, boarding passes, credit cards, membership cards, and IDs.

Alongside the new fitness and software changes, there are several other third party apps that are arriving onto the platform. Namely, WhatsApp will make it easier to connect with friends and family, all without getting your phone out of your pocket. Google Calendar and Gmail will be exclusively available on Wear OS, and Peloton and MyFitnessPal updates are coming soon. Audible will also offer additional streaming options.

A new Skin Temperature API will allow Samsung’s partners to access infrared technology to bring a new world of possibilities in temperature measurement. A new Thermo Check application will take advantage of the new API, allowing users to measure the temperature of the water before and after swimming sessions.

Galaxy Z Flip 5 users will also be able to use the Camera Controller to remotely control their devices’ camera, and switch between modes and zoom. Many more features are coming to the smartwatches that’ll enhance the experience for Galaxy users, and Samsung Knox will help retain private information securely on the smartwatches.

Battery

samsung-galaxy-watch-6-series-img-6

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 6, 40mm, and the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic 43mm, will offer a 300 mAh battery capacity, while the 44mm Watch 6 and the 47mm Watch 6 Classic models will have a 425 mAh battery. All smartwatches support fast wireless charging, and Samsung says that all smartwatches can last for up to 40 hours with Always-on Display turned off, or up to 30 hours with it being turned on.

Your mileage may vary, depending on the GPS, AoD, and many other factors that could drain the battery even faster. Samsung also says that a quick 8 minutes of fast charge will provide an additional eight of battery life, enough to track sleep during the night.

The new capacities are a blow to smartwatch enthusiasts and anyone who expected a larger capacity. The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro had a large 590 mAh capacity, and it was able to run for a comfortable two days for many users, and sometimes even for three days on a single charge.

We can only hope that the new chip and the added optimizations in Wear OS 4 and One UI 5 Watch will provide a battery improvement that’s at least comparable to the previous generation. Still, as always, we’ll have to conduct our own tests before we can come to a conclusion.
