Vertical – Advanced Flight Control Laws Engineer – sUAS News – The Business of Drones

Join the Flight Control Laws Team based in Bristol as an Advanced Flight Control Laws Engineer and help us to achieve our mission of pioneering electric aviation.

What success will look like for you, as an Advanced Flight Control Laws Engineer?

The Flight Control Laws team are a close-knit and agile team, working within the Digital & Flight Systems squad at Vertical. We work closely with our partner, Honeywell, to ensure the aircraft flies safely, has optimum performance and is robust to the environment within which it operates.

As the Flight Control Laws are the brains of the aircraft, we interface with almost every other team at Vertical; understanding and managing (often competing) stakeholder requirements is crucial.
Your responsibilities will include management of the Flight Control Laws requirements (we use Jama!), including definition of new system-level requirements to EARS standard (or equivalent), requirements organisation and linking, and you will aid in the definition of means of validation and verification; experience with Certification and Flight Test are beneficial, but not essential.

You will also take the lead on some of our Simulation activities, developing tools in MATLAB where required and you will be comfortable with Simulink and have an appreciation of Model-based design and best practices concerning the use of Simulink.

What we would like you to bring

Since we’re a compact team, we seek someone who excels in environments where they can leverage their best skills to tackle diverse challenges. You’ll be crafting solutions with the right level of rigor tailored to each task. You will bring some Flight Control Laws experience to a highly talented and experienced team who are expanding. You will have the opportunity for involvement with many aspects of Flight Control Laws development from requirements definition through to simulation, Flight Test, and requirements validation and verification.

As an engineer you will be highly-motivated, curious and pride your ability for critical thinking and robust decision making. As an Advanced Flight Control Laws Engineer, you will bring together a good understanding of aircraft flight dynamics, control theory and systems engineering.

We are looking for people that will have the following qualifications and experiences: BS in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical/Computer Engineering, Computer Science or related field with at least 6 years of experience within the Aerospace domain OR MS/PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical/Computer Engineering, Computer Science with at least 4 years of experience within the Aerospace domain.  You will also have good knowledge of Control Theory (classical and modern), will be competent with MATLAB and Simulink as well as requirements management and associated tools (e.g., DOORs, Jama). You will also ideally hold experience with one or more aspects of aircraft Flight Control Laws design, validation, verification.

What can you expect from us?

We’re on a mission. Where others see limits, we see opportunity, and we work at pace. Working at Vertical isn’t your average role but for those seeking a challenge, a flexible, supportive organisation and an incredible team; working here is an opportunity to do the best work of your career.

Our approach promotes ingenuity and courage, while our environment builds success through diligence in safety and being open in the way we work. The only way we’re going to assure the next chapter of aviation history is by working as a team, relentlessly, towards our goal.
